Plains, Georgia offers a unique opportunity to explore three historic sites to learn how a small, agricultural community impacted the life of the 39th President and First Lady of the United States of America. Historic Plains offers an opportunity to explore the hometown of the former President and First Lady as well as visit the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site which includes Plains High School, the 1888 Train Depot (1976 Presidential Campaign Headquarters), and the Boyhood Farm.
Fees
No fees are charged for visiting the park.
Lunch
No food or drinks are sold at the historic site. There are two picnic areas in Plains with picnic tables and restrooms: Reese City Park located beside the Depot Museum and Plains Visitors Center on HWY 280. Plains has two restaurants. Local restaurants will cater lunches for large groups if you are interested call: Buffalo Cafe at 229-824-4520 and Bonita’s on HWY 280. Groups need to make lunch reservations at least one week in advance.
Restrooms and Water
Restroom facilities and water fountains are located at Plains High School Museum, the Boyhood Farm, Plains Visitors Center, and Reese Park by the Depot Museum.
Souvenirs
Souvenirs may be purchased downtown as well as ice cream, drinks, peanuts, and peanut candies. The Plains Georgia Visitors Center on HWY 280 carries drinks and snacks as well as souvenirs and a bookstore is located at the Plains High School Museum.
Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail seeds and merchandise is sold at the Plains Antique Mall located on Main Street. You can purchase one of the official trail children’s book A Journey To Plains. Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter wrote the Foreword for this book.
